Preparing for a water supply interruption
Store a little. Know where to find local advice.
Core sources checked 27 October 2026: Be Ready and Drinking Water Inspectorate guidance on notices, restrictions and domestic filters. Follow your supplier’s live instructions.
Keep suitable drinking water and check your supplier’s contact details in advance. A drinking-water baseline does not include every household use.
Build a suitable store
Use sealed drinking water or clean containers intended for food and water. Follow product storage and replacement instructions. Keep it accessible and away from heat and contamination. Plan separately for cooking, hygiene, pets and individual feeding or care needs.
Check the notice you receive
A supply interruption, boil-water notice, do-not-drink notice and do-not-use notice mean different things. Follow your water supplier’s exact instructions for your area. Do not assume tap water is safe when supply returns.
Boiling and filters have limits
Boiling does not remove all chemical contaminants. Ordinary domestic filters do not make every contaminated supply safe. Do not substitute boiling or filtering for a supplier’s do-not-drink or do-not-use instruction.
Individual needs
Follow current professional guidance for infant feeding and medical needs. Do not rely on a generic litres estimate for these requirements. Ask your supplier about priority services and how support works in your area.
